Inmates can buy playing cards featuring cold case murders

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma authorities are hoping to solve unsolved killings and other cold cases by selling decks of playing cards that feature the cases to prisoners.

The state Bureau of Investigation and state Department of Correction showcased the cards Wednesday. The decks are reminiscent of those distributed in 2003 to help U.S. troops identify members of Saddam Hussein’s government during the Iraq War.

Bureau of Investigation Director Stan Florence says similar programs in Florida, Colorado, Connecticut and South Carolina have garnered information that helped solve about 40 homicides.

The cards are being sold at six of the state’s approximately two dozen prisons at $1.42 per pack and will eventually be the only playing cards available at the other facilities.

Oklahoma has approximately 27,000 inmates.

"Cold case playing cards" lead to 2nd murder arrest, police say

NORWALK, Conn. — Police have made an arrest in the 2012 killing of a man in Norwalk, the second arrest this week in cases featured on Connecticut’s so-called cold case playing cards.

CBS Hartford affiliate WFSB-TV reports 22-year-old Hakeem Atkinson was arraigned Thursday on a charge of murder in the February 2012 death of Joseph Bateman.

Bateman’s death was described on a playing card in a deck offered for sale to prison inmates as part of an effort to generate tips.

An arrest was made Tuesday in another Norwalk case featured in the deck, the shooting death of Michael Robinson Jr. in 2010.

Atkinson’s bond was set at $1 million. His lawyer had pressed for a lower amount, noting that Atkinson turned himself in after learning of the warrant for his arrest.

Investigators said Atkinson shot and killed Bateman behind a housing complex in Norwalk, WFSB notes, adding that information about the murder
