A California man arrested in connection with a 1998 cold case homicide in Salem was extradited back to Oregon and arraigned on murder charges Thursday.

After years of living under an alias, Fernando Cortez, 38, was located at his home in Oxnard — a thousand miles away from where he allegedly shot and killed a Salem teen in a Circle K parking lot.

Cortez is accused of shooting Alfredo Lopez-Nabor, 16, during a fight outside a convenience store on 4710 Portland Road NE on May 9, 1998.

Salem police Lt. Dave Okada said investigators believe the fight was gang-related.
