Cold case squad looks to solve New Castle County murders [video]

The arrest of a suspect in a 30-year-old Wilmington murder led New Castle County’s cold case squad to Dalton, Georgia.

The case of Joseph Braun, a piano teacher, who was killed in his home near Wilmington on July 1, 1985, had sat on the shelves until the cold case squad reopened it.

“I was approached by our now-retired Col. Elmer Setting, who had the wisdom to want to start a cold case homicide unit,” said Glenn Davis, who is half of New Castle County’s cold case unit.

Davis, who serves in a civilian capacity, along with Detective Brian Shahan make up the two-man squad. Davis says his civilian status limits him in some ways, but he’s still able to use his investigative skills to the fullest.

Shahan is a 20-year-old vet who admits to having to make some adjustments to his work style when he took the job. “I was a little hesitant

Florida man sentenced in cold-case murder of Bucks County teen

A Florida man was sentenced Monday to 13½ to 27 years in prison for the 1984 murder of a Bucks County teenager, according to the district attorney’s office.

George F. Shaw, 57, of Geneva, Fla., was found guilty in July of third-degree murder and attempted indecent assault of 14-year-old Barbara Rowan, whom family and friends described as “sweet” and “innocent.” After a brief bench trial, Common Pleas Court Judge Wallace H. Bateman Jr. took five days to determine the verdict, which he handed down without comment.

Who murdered this 72-year-old grandmother? Moore County reopens its coldest case.

In 1989, sheriff’s deputies in Moore County discovered a crime scene that haunts memories after nearly three decades: the body of 72-year-old Evelyn Williams, face-down in a utility room off her garage, her throat cut.

Within hours, investigators described the murder as “a real whodunit,” offering no clues. A recent widow, Williams led an active life near Pinehurst Course No. 6, golfing with friends, playing regular sets of tennis, making Christmas cards for her grandchildren.

Her body was fully clothed. Her pocketbook was missing from the house – the only residence on Butte Circle at the time – but deputies could not pin down robbery as a motive.

They searched in vain for footprints in the woods. They dragged a nearby lake, acting on a misguided tip. They offered a reward that quickly rose from $5,000 to $11,000. But the case offered no solid leads, Williams’ name disappeared from headlines and her family
