Cold case goes to jury, deliberations underway for woman charged in ‘horrific’ 1995 murder

Tricia Abney

A 22-year-old case, a killing where the alleged dismembered body was never found, is now in the hands of a Jefferson County jury.

Deputy District Attorneys Kylie Jernigan and Neal Zarzour rested their case against Tricia Abney Thursday morning. Abney is charged with capital murder during the course of a robbery for the 1995 killing of 23-year-old Justin Barnett.

Abney’s attorneys Emory Anthony and Wakisha Hazzard rested their case as well, without calling any witnesses or having Abney testify.

“They have nothing,” Anthony said during closing statements. “I don’t believe there ever was a plan.”

Anthony said the prosecution’s case rests solely on testimony from Johnathan Abney–the defendant’s brother–who came forward in 2015 to report a murder from 20 years prior. He told police his sister and her boyfriend at the time, Jeff Martin,

Woman charged in cold case murder accused of fighting with cellmate

JACKSON, MI – A woman in jail awaiting trial on a murder charge in a case that dates to 2009 now faces a new charge after police allege she attacked her cellmate.

Tiffany Lynn Reichard, 25, was arraigned Sept. 11 on one misdemeanor count on assault and battery, according to court records.

While lodged in the Jackson County Jail downtown Aug. 19, police say Reichard got into an argument with her cellmate, a 32-year-old Lansing woman, that escalated into a physical fight, Jackson County Undersheriff Christopher Kuhl said.

A floor officer heard the fight and broke it up before it could escalate further, Kuhl said.

The victim, who didn’t appear to have suffered any serious injuries, told police she wanted to press charges against Reichard, stating she had pulled her hair and struck her in the head, Kuhl said.

The case was sent to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, which authorized the charges
