BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Detectives arrested a man on Tuesday in a cold case that has haunted a Washington state county for almost 30 years.

After investigating thousands of leads, Sheriff Bill Elfo said deputies arrested Timothy Forrest Bass, 50, of Everson, on suspicion of the first degree murder, first degree kidnapping and first degree rape.

Amanda “Mandy” Stavik disappeared in Whatcom County on Nov. 24, 1989 after leaving her home on Strand Rd. to go for a jog with the family dog. Several hours later, the dog returned home, but Mandy did not.

After an exhaustive search, Stavik’s body was found in the South Fork of the Nooksack River. She was 18 years old at the time.

Elfo said deputies looked into “hundreds of suspects” over the years, but they only led to dead ends – until a recent DNA

Man arrested in connection with 1980 murder of California teenager

ANTIOCH, Calif. — A notorious 37-year-old cold case has finally been closed in northern California, CBS San Francisco reports.

Police arrested 63-year-old Mitchell Bacom Monday evening on suspicion of kidnapping, raping and murdering a teenage girl — who was later identified as 14-year-old Suzanne Bombardier — while she was babysitting in Antioch in 1980.

A fisherman discovered Bombardier’s body in the San Joaquin River days later. She had been stabbed once in the heart.

After decades with few leads, investigators reopened the case in 2015 using DNA evidence.

“Thanks to advances in forensic science, obtaining this positive identification for Suzanne’s killer became a reality,” Antioch Police Chief Tammany Brooks said.

Bacom’s arrest closes the oldest unsolved murder within the Antioch Police Department.

Man arrested in Colorado on Iowa cold case murder charge

A man who was married to a southeast Iowa woman who went missing in 2000 has been arrested and charged with killing her.

The Iowa Public Safety Department says 52-year-old Michael Lee Syperda was taken into custody Thursday in the Glenwood Springs area of Colorado. A Henry County grand jury indicted him Wednesday on a charge of first-degree murder. Court records don’t list the name of an attorney for him.

Authorities intend to have him extradited to Iowa. Department agent Ryan Kedley declined to say what led to the arrest after so many years.

Elizabeth Syperda was last seen July 16, 2000, in Mount Pleasant. Family and friends think she may have gone walking to meet Michael Syperda, who lived nearby. The two were estranged at the time.
